Detailed Information:
M78 is located in the constellation Orion about 2.5 degrees northeast of Zeta Orionis in Orion's belt. It is accompanied by NGC 2064, NGC 2067, and NGC 2071. All of these shine by reflected light from the young, hot Type-B stars in the area. See annotated image below.
