NGC 4449 (Caldwell 21) is an irregular dwarf galaxy member of the Canes Venaticorum group of galaxies. It is similar in size and appearance to our neighboring Large Magellanic Cloud. This galaxy plays a part in the history of astronomy because it was one of the objects that deceived Herschel into thinking that he had resolved &quot;nebula&quot; into stars. The clouded hourglass with clumped stellar filigree were misperceived to be resolved into stars, but telescope of the ninteenth century were not sufficiently powerful to permit such a resolution at the great distance this galaxy occupies from the Milky Way galaxy.<br /><br />NGC 4449 ia an active star-forming dwarf galaxy oriented at 43 degree angle away from face-on. The central bar region is composed of very old stars more than 5 million years in age. However the reddish regions are emitting light in the hydrogen alpha band because they are HII regions with embedded star formation. The bluish white regions are star clusters.
