Detailed Information:
This is a small (13 arc sec) but extremely rich open cluster. It has many bright stars that caused multiple blooms on the luminance images taken to create this LRBG image. For that reason I combined 20 short luminance exposures in CCDStack to repair the regions under the blooms of the longer exposures.

This open cluster was first observed by Gottfried Kirch on 1 September 1681, and it was added by Messier to his list on 30 May 1764. The name, The Wild Duck Cluster, came from a reference to it resemblance to a "flight of wild ducks" in the description by Admiral W.H. Smyth. While its appearance could almost be thought to resemble a loose globular cluster and, in fact, some older texts have considered it to be a globular cluster. Recent evidence confirms that it is indeed and open cluster. Recent estimates of its age place it around 150 million years old.
