Detailed Information:
M027, NGC 6853 is the famous of the planetary nebule. It was discovered by Messier in 1764. As one of the closer planetary nebulae, it is an excellent example of what happens when a star in fianl stages throws off its outer layers. These stars finally collapse into dwarf stars, as the blue dwarf seen in the center of this picture of the nebula demonstrates. This nebula has multiple shells of ionized gas. The greenish area is composed of doubly ionized oxygen and is expanding at 9 miles per second while another shell of ionized nitrogen is expanding at 20 miles per second. The entire structure appears to grow about 6 arc seconds per century. M27 is a good targe for binoculars, but is best seen with greater aperture.

This image was chosen as Astromart Photo of the Day - 15 July 2007.
